Artist Biography

Karinda Ristic is an emerging abstract artist originally from Cape Town, South Africa and is now living in Ontario, Canada. She creates ethereal abstract landscapes with mixed media, exploring the inner journey of one’s authentic self and being a part of this beautiful planet we live on. She is mostly self-taught, although she enjoys learning new skills through participating in many different art courses over the years. Initially she worked with acrylic paints, but her artwork has organically shifted over the last 8 years, since during this time she has moved around the world with her partner and two children. This has given her a unique perspective of the world and now she mostly works with fluid ink mediums and sews into the canvas with embroidery thread. Karinda has participated in a variety of group exhibitions in Canada. One of her highlights was when she was invited to do a talk at the opening event of the Unity Art group exhibition in British Columbia. Her work has also been published in a variety of international art magazines.

Artist Statement

Karinda Ristic is a creator of personal journeys through ethereal contemporary landscape paintings. This creative process is a combination of what she sees and what she feels. An instinctive process, each painting is a planted seed that connects her a little deeper to her authentic self, mapping the journey and bringing her closer to the land and her personal healing. With each brush stroke, the medium flows freely onto the canvas. The process is a powerful guide and she surrenders to the canvas, lets go and trusts in the journey. The very nature of this medium transports her into an existential state of mind allowing her to interact with the painting in the moment, otherwise the fusing of herself and the canvas becomes blurred. Each landscape is an organic experience that allows her to express her journey in layers of colour, space and luminosity. These diverse somewhat cryptic characteristics expose a deep connection between the viewer, the artist and the artwork. As a final touch, Karinda sews embroidery thread into the canvas. This not only acts as her personal signature, but it also amplifies the organic nature of the work and creates interesting lines and textures.  The thread can be seen as a form of surgery, bonding and strengthening the layers of colour, space and luminescence.
